A journey from the anonymous to the personal which is amazing and sometimes puzzling. Since becoming full time, each project has taken on this same arc. While completely unexpected (at least to me), it has energized and contributed to a new sense of wonder. Photography is my third career - the result of a passion acquired in Maine many years ago. Most of this work is done on film. At least it begins there. The monochrome is printed in the traditional darkroom, the color scanned and printed on inkjet printers. I no longer print color in the darkroom although the experience in color and contrast management strongly affects how I print digitally. My education includes study at Parsons School of Design, International Center for Photography, Maine Media Workshops and Cuyahoga Community College.
I am a director of ICA Art Conservation and of the Friends of Photography at the Cleveland Museum of Art and also serve as a board member at Wire-Net and a Life Director of Jewish Family Services Association of Cleveland. Statement Becoming full time in 2008 changed the work in profound ways. Previously, people were anonymous and it was more about the public space. In this new time, the work has become intensely personal - often involving portraiture. This can be seen The Album Project, Precious Objects and, still in progress, Costumes. Every Place begins with my childhood home that, at the time of the photograph, had been empty for years and was in foreclosure. Today it is a vacant lot. In addition to being more personal, the work has become less traditionally photographic both in form and method. So, this is truly a journey which travels from safe commentary on the world around me to the less comfortable environment of my family, my neighborhood and my history. "Like the burlesque comedian, I am abnormally fond of that precision which creates movement" -- e e cummingsBecause I serve on the board of a conservation lab, I make an effort to produce and prepare his work consistent with the desire for it to last. That is not always easy when things get large or leave the safety of a frame. Gallery Chuck is represented by: 1point618 Gallery
